This film is the first investigative documentary of its kind about the dark side of a previous glamorous industry. It deals with the mysterious death of a British pilot, heavily injured flight-attendants and passengers, cover-ups and near air disasters:
“UNFILTERED BREATHED IN – The Truth about Aerotoxic Syndrome” focuses on the partially slow intoxications caused by extremely dangerous chemical compounds within the jet-turbine engine oils of modern aircraft, which can get into the cabin breathing air. Most people are not aware that this breathing air aboard jet aircraft is directly taken of the turbine engines and comes unfiltered into the cabin. For a long time it has been suspected that these compounds can cause irreversible nerve damage.
For more than seven years Tim van Beveren, investigative journalist and filmmaker from Berlin, Germany conducted extensive research into an inconvenient issue for airlines and aircraft manufactures. In the past Mr van Beveren has already been the author and editor of numerous publications on this topic for publicly owned broadcasters (ARD – German Television Network) and renown newspapers (e.g. Die Welt).
Insiders, scientists, medical doctors, engineers, air crew and eye-witnesses were interviewed on camera by Mr van Beveren. The amount of partially highly confidential and internal documents that van Beveren received from them shows how similar the strange symptoms of this specific disease encountered by flight crews and passengers is to what has become known as the “Gulf War Syndrome”.
More than two years the filmmaker followed the scientific-forensic and pathological investigation into the mysterious death of British Airways pilot Richard Westgate († 2012). The pilot had donated his body to science to make it possible for the first time ever that the effects of “Aerotoxic Syndrome” could be researched and established in depth. The results of this investigation and the concerns of the Senior Coroner of Her Majesty the Queen have become subject of extensive media reporting in the UK lately.
While industry representatives still strongly deny the existence of “Aerotoxic Syndrome” van Beveren travelled once around the world during his research and production of this documentary: from Berlin to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Glasgow, Sydney, Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver. The alarming conclusion: everybody who boards an aircraft may at anytime encounter a – preventable – severe health risk. Now is the time to act.
